Fittings
One of the first things to look at on a shade is whether the fitting is compatible with your lamp or if it requires and adapter. Most shades in the US have a Spider fitting also known as a Harp or Finial fitting . The top of the shade has a spider frame with that sits over the harp and is attached with a finial. Harps can come in various sizes to raise or lower the shade.
Another type of fitting is called and UNO fitting and is common for European lamps and also for US Pendant lamps and smaller shades. The diameter of the fitting hole is larger and fits over the lamp socket. Adapters are available to convert an UNO to a US spider and also to narrow the fitting hole for UK lamps.
To convert an UNO to a harp fitting you can purchase an adapter shown to the left.
Elegant Styles
Shades come in a variety of styles, the most common being the Drum style which is measured across the diameter of the drum and then the height of the shade. Other shapes we can offer via special order include an Imperial, Rectangle and Oval.
Selecting the shape of the shade and the height of the shade is important to the balance and overall look of the lamp. A general guideline is to select a lampshade that is roughly 40% of the overall height of the lamp and roughly double the size of the lamp base. The height of the shade should cover the socket of the lamp, so that the hardware is not visible. The shape of the shade should be compatible with the shape of the lamp.
We encourage you to bring your lamp and shade when selecting your shade and/or to measure and bring both the height and width of your shade and the height of the lamp to the socket.
A Shade is just a Shade right?
Well not exactly. What you need to know to insure you get the right shade for your lamp or the right adapter for your shade.
